Why People Don’t File For Divorce – Celebrity Examples

Publish Date: 07/29/2014

There are several blogs on this site about why people choose to get divorced. But there are many people who choose to remain married, when no one would blame them for pulling the plug on their marriage. There are several reasons for this:

  1. Money. - Shelly Sterling, wife of disgraced LA Clippers owner, Donald Sterling, has every reason to file for divorce. Donald has been openly bringing a girlfriend to the basketball games and made several racist comments to this girlfriend, which were recently publicized, resulting in a hefty fine and in him being banned for life by the NBA. Despite these facts, she has not filed for divorce. When asked about a possible divorce in a recent interview with Barbara Walters, Shelly responded: "For years, I've been seeing attorneys for a divorce. In fact, I have here - I just filed - I was going to file the petition. I signed the petition for divorce. And it came to almost being filed. And then, my financial advisor and my attorney said to me, 'Not now.'" ABC News Exclusive: Shelly Sterling: 'Eventually, I'm Going to' File for Divorce, by Michael Rothman via Good Morning America, May 11, 2014. Shelly says that "eventually" she will file for divorce. But you can bet she will be listening to the advice of her attorney and financial advisor before doing so.
  2. Politics. - Hillary Clinton was likely humiliated when her husband, Bill Clinton, first denied having an affair under oath, and then later admitted to the infidelity with Monica Lewinsky. Nonetheless, she always stood by her husband and never publicly wavered in her support for him as a husband or a politician. Presumably, this is due to his political aspirations (in remaining President of the United States) and her own political aspirations. Though no one would have blamed her for divorcing him under the circumstances, her steadfast support likely played a large role in his remaining President. In addition, it shows a lot about her character, which may have played into her being named Secretary of State.
  3. Want to Fight for Marriage Despite All Odds. - Some people just want to do everything they can to make their marriage work. Kay Robertson, wife of Duck Dynasty's Phil Robertson, says the worst advice she got after her husband revealed he cheated on her was to leave him. Duck Dynasty's Miss Kay Reveals Why She Didn't Leave Phil Robertson After He Cheated, huffingtonpost.com, May, 7, 2014. She said she never believed she would have to fight for her marriage under these circumstances but she wanted to stick with it, stating "[i]f we would have not stayed together I would have known in my heart that I had done everything I could possibly do to make that marriage work."
