Sometimes, it seems as if celebrities are treated differently in the eyes of the law and may be cut some slack that "normal" people would not. Rapper Scarface recently learned that this is not always the case. Scarface Arrested Minutes After Accepting BET Award, by TMZ Staff, tmz.com, October 11, 2015. The rapper received the "I Am Hip-Hop Icon" award at the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta. Just after receiving the award and making a speech on stage, he was arrested and taken to Fulton County Jail for unpaid child support. Here, his celebrity status did not help him. Conversely, it likely presented an easier alternative for arrest, as it was public knowledge that he would receive the award. This news story is not to suggest that a person who is behind on child support should avoid the public eye for fear of arrest. Rather, if you are in arrears on child support payments, it will most likely catch up with you, no matter who you are. Certainly, if there is a pending child support contempt action, a sheriff or process server will likely be able to find you at your residence or place of work. If you are willfully refusing to pay the amount owed, you could find yourself in jail just like Scarface. The better option is to reach out to your ex to try to work out a payment plan. Even if you are unable to pay the full amount owed immediately, the Judge will look more kindly upon you if you are at least making an effort. In addition, the Judge will likely give you some time to pay everything off according to an agreed upon payment plan rather than immediately jailing you for contempt.
