Shatorree is a licensed Georgia attorney who joined Meriwether & Tharp, LLC in January 2017. In addition to her law degree, Shatorree has earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management, an associate degree in Arts and a license in Cosmetology.  Prior to becoming a licensed attorney, Shatorree Bates interned in the District Attorney’s office, in Juvenile Court, and at an entertainment law firm in Atlanta.

Shatorree’s courtroom litigation training began in 2007 when she was hired as a law clerk for a judge in a District Court in Texas. She was certified as a mediator in 2008, and completed the Alternative Dispute Resolution training at Atlanta Justice Center in 2016.  Between 2008 and 2014, Shatorree founded and managed the successful law practice of Bates Law Firm, LLC in Atlanta.  She litigated family law cases and advocated for children as a Guardian ad Litem.  She also counseled business owners and real estate clients and litigated bankruptcy cases in the Northern District of Georgia Federal Court.

Shatorree worked as a staff attorney in the Family Division of Fulton County Superior Court from October 2014 through December 2016.  In Fulton County Superior Court, she managed thousands of family law cases that included divorces, custody, child support, alimony, modification requests, family violence, contempt actions and cases involving disputes about division of property and businesses.  Working with the judges and staff in Fulton County Superior Court provided Shatorree with tremendous insight on the perspective of all court personnel involved in the judicial process.  She has a great sense of the most important factors that judges consider, and uses this knowledge to exceed expectations when representing her clients.  Shatorree has written many articles that have been published and has chaired and presented many Continuing Legal Education seminars to other attorneys.

When counseling and advising clients pre-divorce, Shatorree draws from her experience working in the courts, in addition to over 20 years of experience outlined above, and as a parental guardian, business owner, college teacher, social worker, mortgage consultant and crisis intervention specialist.  Her strengths include her attention to detail, her financial acumen, her compassion and her creative and practical approach to problem solving. Through her “gift of counseling,” she offers considerate, measured guidance to her clients on a wide range of issues they face with their families and finances when contemplating divorce.

When representing clients going through a divorce, she focuses on the best interests of any children who are involved, on facilitating preservation of familial relationships,  on preserving her clients resources and encouraging them to retain their final decision making authority by reaching an amicable settlement through negotiation and mediation. When settlement is not possible, Shatorree confidently proceeds to trial as a zealous advocate on behalf of her clients. In every case, she focuses intently on long-term solutions to benefit her clients. Her broad range of experience makes her astute in handling complex family law cases.

Shatorree is an accomplished and well respected attorney who works primarily out of the Atlanta office in Midtown.  When she is not working or volunteering, Shatorree enjoys traveling, partaking in the arts, visiting new restaurants, playing volleyball and spending quality time with her friends and loved ones.
